Hey guys, it's Joi here, and today's video is going to be all about how to grow your natural hair. I know a lot of you guys are on your hair growth journey. Today we're going to be talking about my favorite products and tools, how often I'm washing my hair, hair types, and more. If you love hair tutorials and other lifestyle videos, make sure you subscribe to this channel because I post a ton. Please turn on the notification bell to know every time I post a video to my channel.

I have type four hair, and I will not get into any more specifics about whether it's for ABC, just because I have different curl patterns inside of my hair. No one has just one hair texture in their hair. Hair type doesn't necessarily negate how you should be caring for your hair. Things like hair porosity and genetics have a lot to do with how you should be caring for your hair. Also, I don't think hair types should not be a debated subject amongst naturals. Aguing what somebody's hair type stems from Eurocentric standards and is only one factor in your hair health.

Let's get into my bare essentials of hair growth and care. I will have a link down below that has all of the products I use in my videos. If you want to know what shampoos, deep conditioners, and tools that I use, all of that will be listed there, but I want to highlight a few things that have been my staples.

My sophomore year of high school is when I stopped straightening my hair. FYI, I've never had a perm. I have only straightened my hair, and that resulted in heat damage. It's been six years since I've straightened my hair. The first essential that I've had since the beginning of time is the Denman brush. It's a detangling brush that I use on my wet hair in the shower after I deep condition. Thanks to @natural85, I learned that you take out every other row of it so that it doesn't rip out your hair. If you don't have a Denman brush, get one because it makes detangling so much easier.

Also, for detangling, I use the Diva Curl wash day wonder pre-cleanse slip detangler. First, I wet my hair in the shower and put pre-cleanse on it. Then I finger detangle and put the shampoo right over the top of it without rinsing the pre-cleanse out. It makes all the tangles melt away. This is necessary because it makes wash day go so much easier because you don't have to do detangling outside of the shower, so if you need any suggestions for detangling, check out those two links below.

Also, for wash day, I always use my scalp massaging brush. When I first went natural, I didn't have one of these, but now I use one every time I wash my hair. The one I'm currently using is from Vanity Planet.

As far as drying your natural hair, make sure you use a microfiber towel. A cotton towel will pull out your hair and cause breakage. I use a microfiber towel that's from Diva Curl.

As far as shampoos and conditioners, it depends on your hair. One that I've been using the longest is the Diva Curl One Condition Decadence and No-Poo Decadence for shampoo and conditioner. Shea Moisture and As I Am are also some brands that I've used throughout the years. One deep conditioner I did want to mention is the As I Am hydration elation. It's perfect for the winter weather because it's a thick, deep conditioner that will help get your hair soft.

When I first went natural, I deep conditioned weekly because I was trying to improve my hair's health due to heat damage. I was trimming occasionally and using deep conditioners to help the health of my hair. Eventually, I stopped doing them frequently, and I was able to extend my wash days up to six weeks. That's when my hair grew the longest. I started at shoulder length when I first went natural, and then I grew it to waist length. The shrinkage is real, but my hair does stretch down pretty far. Due to low manipulation, it helped my hair grow long. Nowadays, I'm washing my hair every two to three weeks because that's what my hair likes. We're going into the winter, and my scalp is feeling a little dry right now, so I'm probably going to start incorporating some oils into my routine.

Some natural hair setbacks I've had over my journey include single strand knots and shrinkage. Also, I never do wash n' gos because they don't work on my hair. I won't have any volume, and my hair will be so short even when I do my braid-outs.

This is just an explainer video. But just know that different things will affect your hair that you might not be able to change. I didn't want to make this video too long because I know that there's a lot of other stuff you can explore on my channel as far as hair growth, but check out all these products I mentioned. I think they're staples and essentials. BTW, this wasn't sponsored in any way, shape, or form. I'll talk to you guys next time. Bye.
