Summer Wash Day Routine for Natural Hair

This is my updated natural hair wash day routine for spring / summer 2019. This hair routine takes me about 1 hour from washing my hair to styling my braid out on my natural hair. I complete this about every 2 weeks and may co-wash at the half-way point depending on how my hair feels!

Hey guys, it's Joi here, and this is my summer wash day routine. These are the products I'll be using, and they'll be linked down in the description box below. Make sure you subscribe to my channel because we are close to 100,000 subscribers, and I'm so excited about it. I am having a 100k subscriber party here in Atlanta. So if you're based in Atlanta and want to come through, make sure you go RSVP.

But let's get into my wash day. First, I'd like to make sure my hair is soaking wet. Water is essential for helping me get my tangles out. Then I slowly start to section it off into four sections. If it's very tangled, I try to work in as many sections as possible. I make sure that I'm gentle with my hair as I work through it.

I'm using the Shea Moisture, coconut hibiscus shampoo to get the dirt and build up out of my hair. During the summer, it's hot and humid outside. When you're sweating, you want to get all that dirt and build up out of your scalp. So then I go ahead and rinse out the shampoo.

And I'm just going to show you how I start to finger detangle. I'm pulling off small sections and running my fingers through them. This is prepping my hair for when I go to detangle with my Denman brush later on. It's just helping the curls lay flatter and get those large tangles out. After I rinse out the shampoo, I use my Garnier hair food deep conditioner. These deep conditioners have been working well for my hair, and they smell amazing. And they're also really affordable. A jar was about $5 at the store.

Next, I twist all four sections of my hair. So at this point, all four sections have my hair done. Now it's time to detangle. I like to keep the water on for my detangling process because running water helps my tangles come out of my hair. Usually, my ends are the most tangled, so I like to get those tangles out first. Then I use the water to help run the brush through my hair. I've tried out so many different detangling brushes, but the Denman brush is just one that I am in love with. It goes to my hair the easiest, defines my hair the best, and sees the least breakage. Let me know what detailing brush you like to use in the comments down below.

Next, I'm taking the Shea Moisture coconut hibiscus conditioner, and I'm putting that on the detangled section and then putting it into a large twist while detangling the rest of my hair. Once the rest of my hair is detangled, I take all of those twists out, and then I add my leave-in conditioner. Today I'm using the Cantu leave-in conditioner. At the beginning of my natural hair journey eight or nine years ago, I used the Cantu leave-in conditioner almost every day. Then I took a break from it, and now I'm back using it. I like it because it smells great, and my hair is super soft after I use it. I'm so glad that I'm coming back to the original products that I love.

I'm also adding argan oil to seal in the moisture. Once you're done with this, you're done with the wash process. And you can go ahead and style your hair however you'd like. I decided to go with a braid out by doing eight individual braids. Then in the morning, once it's dry, I'll take it down, and I'll get a nice fro. I didn't add any other products besides the leave-in and the oil but feel free to add creams and gels. I don't add that at this point because my hair takes way too long to dry.

I hope you guys enjoy my update of the wash day routine. Subscribe to my channel. We are almost at 100k, and I'm so thankful for you for coming to my channel. Thanks so much for watching, and I'll talk to you guys next time. Bye.
